Filipino Friday (Bonus!): ReaderCon Excitement

readercon2013-ff

So this post was supposed to go up earlier, but the silence got to us a little bit and we forgot. Sorry about that! But look at that — suddenly it’s a week before the (new) Filipino ReaderCon date, again! It felt like this month just breezed through — not easily, if I may add — and now November’s ending and here’s December! And then it’s ReaderCon! Whew.

The last Filipino Friday for the year was supposed to be the fifth one, about what readers want. But since we have a bit more time now, we thought: why not a bonus Filipino Friday for everyone?

So for this Filipino Friday, here’s the question:

What are you most excited about for this year’s ReaderCon?

Are you excited about the panels? What panels are you planning to attend, and why? The book discussions? Have you picked which one to attend? Are you excited to meet some of the awesome local authors we have invited? Are you ready to receive recommendations from the Book Recommendation Fair? Or are you there for the Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards? Are you going with your friends, or alone? Are you excited to meet bloggers and other readers? Tell us what you’re most excited about, and we can spazz about it together as we count down to December 7!

The 3rd Filipino ReaderCon: What Do Readers Want? is 8 days from now! December 7, 8:00am to 6:00pm, and Rizal Library – Ateneo de Manila University. This event is held in partnership with Rizal Library and National Book Development Board (NBDB), and sponsored by Buqo, Fully Booked, Adarna House, Samsung, Scholastic, Flipreads, OMF Literature, Hachette, Simon & Schuster, Island Merchants Corporation, and The Beachsters, with media partners When In Manila and TomasinoWeb. See you next Saturday!

#filreadercon Twitter Chat

Hello everyone! We hope today finds you okay, and way better than yesterday.

We still feel a little bad for postponing the Filipino ReaderCon to a later date (save the new date, okay? December 7!), but we have a few online activities in store for you on the days leading to the new date. Starting with the first ever Filipino ReaderCon Twitter Chat!

Join us tonight, November 9 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm for some great bookish conversation with other Filipino readers. Follow @PinoyReaderCon and use the #filreadercon hash tag on Twitter to follow the chat tonight. Best you use apps such as Tweetdeck, TweetChat or TweetGrid to help you follow the conversation easier.

What to expect in the chat? Like yesterday’s Filipino Friday, we will try to answer the theme of the Filipino ReaderCon this year: What Do Readers Want? We’ll talk about bookish stuff, and answer questions such as:

  • What’s your favorite genre/reading material?
  • Who is your favorite author (local or foreign)?
  • What kinds of books would you like to see more of from local authors or publishers?
  • What is your favorite book from a Filipino author?

There’s more: all participants of the Twitter chat will get a chance to win some bookish prizes! :)

Not on Twitter? We’ll post the questions on Facebook, too, and you can answer them there, too.

Looking forward to a fun chat! Tweet you all tonight! :)

Filipino ReaderCon Advisory and Haiyan/Yolanda

newreadercondate

Hello everyone!

After keeping track of weather news and current conditions here in the Metro and in nearby areas, we’ve decided to postpone the Filipino ReaderCon 2013 to December 7. Venue will still be at the Rizal Library. Although we would’ve loved to keep things on track, we believe it’s in everyone’s best interests that we stay at home on Saturday, Nov. 9, and batten down our hatches, literally and figuratively.

On the bright side, December 7 will give us more time to prepare the things we have to prepare or polish the things we already have.

We hope to see you all on December 7, but in the meantime, we will be keeping all our marketing activities, online and off, active to build towards the new date. And we will stay in touch with each group regarding the new arrangements.

We apologize for this unfortunate turn of events, but again, thank you for supporting the Filipino ReaderCon. We hope we all stay safe against the storm.

Best,
Filipino ReaderCon Core Committee

Filipino Friday 2013 # 5: What Do Readers Want?

readercon2013-ff

We are down to the last Filipino Friday this year! You know what this means, right? That we’ll be back again next year and tomorrow is the day! The 3rd Filipino ReaderCon is tomorrow! :D

In case you missed it, the 3rd Filipino ReaderCon is postponed to December 7, 2013 because of supertyphoon Yolanda. Still the same time, same venue. But even with that change in schedule, we still have a Filipino Friday today.

See how this year’s theme is a question? On our last Filipino Friday for 2013, we want you to answer the question: What do readers want?

To make the questions more specific, here are some questions that we’d like you to answer:

What do readers want?
What’s your favorite genre/reading material?
Who is your favorite author (local or foreign)?
What kinds of books would you like to see more of from local authors or publishers?
What is your favorite book from a Filipino author?

For this Filipino Friday, you can blog with your answers or you can just post your answers in the comment section below. You can also tweet your answers to us at @PinoyReaderCon, or post your answers on Facebook.

We will be using your answers for a little something during the Readers’ Cocktails and Socials at the Filipino ReaderCon on Saturday. You might just see your answer in front. ;)

The 3rd Filipino ReaderCon: What Do Readers Want? is tomorrow! November 9, 2013, postponed to December 7, 2013 because of supertyphoon Haiyan/Yolanda. Still 8:00am to 6:00pm, and still Rizal Library – Ateneo de Manila University. Thank you for your continued support, and we hope we still see you at the ReaderCon on the 7th! This event is held in partnership with Rizal Library and National Book Development Board (NBDB), and sponsored by Buqo, Fully Booked, Adarna House, Samsung, Scholastic, Flipreads, OMF Literature, Hachette, Simon & Schuster, Island Merchants Corporation, and The Beachsters, with media partner When In Manila. Stay safe and dry everyone!

Grow Your Book Wish Lists: Book Recommendation Fair 2013

One of the new things we will introduce with this year’s Filipino ReaderCon is the Book Recommendation Fair. You know how there’s so many books, but so little time so sometimes you don’t want to try a book on an impulse but want a solid recommendation from someone else whose taste you trust? Yeah, that feeling, we all have that.

So from 1:00 – 1:45pm of the Filipino ReaderCon on Saturday, we will have a little fair where you can get book recommendations from book clubs and book bloggers in the Philippines, based on the books they’ve read and enjoyed. These are readers who read books just because they love to read and they love books, so you’ll probably find someone there who has the same tastes in books as you do. Or, you’ll find some books you’d want to try even if it’s not your usual genre, because they make it sound so convincing. We don’t know what’s on their recommendation lists yet, but we’re pretty sure you can trust their recommendations even if you’ve never met them in person (but you may have stalked their blogs online, or visited their groups online, too. Don’t worry — we’ve all been lurkers at some point. ;p ).

Here are the groups that will be participating in the Book Recommendation Fair on Saturday:

Book Clubs:

Book Bloggers:

Other than getting recommendations, you can also ask them how to start your own book club or book blog (or both). Feel free to go around and chat with other readers during the Fair, and maybe go home with five new books or so in your wish list. :)
